Architectural detail: Stair treads with small opening

[Hunter House by Darren Carnell Architects via Arch Daily]
This is the same stairway from yesterday's post.  (Just can't get enough, I guess.)  The materials here are gorgeous.  Nothing says 'luxury' like giant sheets of marble, right?  But I think the details are what really make it special.  Every edge is clean and precise.  The marble pattern matches at each seam, the way the stair meets the wall, dedicated stair lights...

But what really caught my attention are the thin slits in each stair tread.  At first I thought there were linear lights in there.  But when I saw the side view, I think they're just openings.

The sliver of light shining through the opening creates movement whether your above or below the stairs.  And it makes a visible line at each tread to make the stairs safer to navigate.  Here is my guess for how they built it.*
*Again, not for construction!  Unless you want to hire me... ;)
