Architectural detail: Stair storage

[Drawer stairs via inhabitat.com]
When I first saw this image, I thought it was genius.  So much storage, yet so clean and efficient!  Then I thought about it some more, and decided it's actually a terrible idea.

When the drawer is opened, it means the stair immediately under that is covered.  So it would be natural to take a step backward.  Can you see where this is going?  That's right; an embarrassed and painful heap at the bottom of the stairs.

And what if you're collecting items from the drawers?  Wouldn't it be awkward to have your arms full, trying to kick the drawer closed, while balancing on one leg?  This detail is just begging for trouble if you ask me.

For storage under the stairs, I think these would be a safer way to go.

Of course, side-access would mean you wouldn't be able to place a bench in front of the stairs like this.

Quite a dilema...
