Planning: Compact bedroom with twin beds

Personally, I think twin beds are the best option for guest bedrooms.  They accommodate a variety of visitors that may not want to share a bed (e.g. siblings, platonic friends, parent and offspring).  And for visiting couples, I think that sleeping in separate beds is less inconvenient to them than it is for, say, brothers sharing a bed.  So.  If a house has only one guest bedroom, I think it should have twin beds.

And if our house is any indication, I'm guessing most guest bedrooms are pretty small.  That's why I liked this image so much.

It's stylish, comfortable and compact.  Here's a quick dissection of elements that make it successful.

And best of all, it's so efficient with space.  If we estimate 39" for each bed and 24" for the nightstand, the whole arrangement only takes 8'-6."  Like so:
Admittedly, some of the charm of the original is lost when the whole room is only 8'-6" wide, which would look more like this:
Slightly more claustrophobic, but not unbearable.  Especially if one of the walls had a window (which is required for bedrooms anyway).  All things considered, it's a pretty good strategy to make a small guest bedroom functional and welcoming.
