Architectural detail: Thick slab marble counter

Thick slabs of marble are practically unheard of in recent construction.  They're insanely expensive, hard to find, and super, super heavy.  But you can still get the illusion of massive pieces of stone with tile.  Like in these photos:

Kitchen cabinets are typically 34-1/2" high, which allow for counters that are 1-1/2" thick.  So if you want counters to be 6" thick (like here), I would look for bathroom cabinets, which are usually 30" high.

Another nice detail in this kitchen is the soffit that runs above the upper cabinets and swings around to house the wiring for the pendant lights above the island.  It's very tidy, functional, and makes the kitchen feel planned-out and deliberate.
