Good Design: Greendale's Human Being

Community is fantastic.  I'm overjoyed that it is back on the air tonight, and I really, really hope that it will be around for another season.  But this is a blog about design, so I'm writing this post to acknowledge the genius, comic design of Greendale Community College's mascot: The Human Being.

What I love about the Human Being is that it doesn't remotely resemble a human being.  From what I remember from the show, the mascot was designed by the Dean (Jim Rash, aka Angelina-stance emulator) and Pierce (Chevy Chase) to represent all races and to be as non-offensive and all-inclusive as possible.  The final result being a creepy hybrid of a voodoo doll, crash-test dummy, and fencing uniform.  (A cautionary tale about designing to please everyone, perhaps?)  But there's no need to over-think it.  Like most good design, it speaks for itself.  And it makes me laugh every time I see it.
