Detail: Icebox latches on cabinets

Icebox latches seem to be very popular lately.  First, I saw this on Remodelista:

Then, I saw this in Pottery Barn:

I think they're cute and retro, but nothing too exciting.  But then I thought some more; could they be an attractive alternative to child-safety latches?

If the icebox latch alone is too simple to serve as a child-safety device, I think its design makes it easier to keep them un-openable.  You could attach a band that would keep the latch from opening out.  Maybe elastic or velcro.

Or something underneath the latch to keep it from opening in, maybe a bumper like this.

Alone, these latches would at least keep out curious pets.  Safety factor aside, I think this one is especially handsome:

Update: Here's another post about using latch hardware as possible child-safety devices.
